Archivist Safety Matches: Hokusai Wave

There’s a certain permanence to Hokusai’s The Great Wave—a composition that feels as dynamic now as it did centuries ago. On this square matchbox, that iconic image is reinterpreted into a smaller, more tactile format, where cresting waves and distant boats bring movement to an otherwise still object. The addition of “The Wave, Luxury Matches” grounds it with a subtle sense of occasion, without overcomplicating the design.

The format remains intentionally simple and functional. Designed to sit comfortably on a coffee table or mantel, it balances visual weight with everyday use. Inside, 125 matchsticks ensure it’s more than decorative—ready to be reached for, used, and left in place.
